2013-2014 Student Scholars

We congratulate the 2014 award recipients of the Women for ATSU Scholars Program and celebrate their achievements.

 

♦ Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health ~ ASDOH

Dr. Jennifer E. Canada –  Jennifer is a Georgia native who holds a B.A. in Economics from Spelman University in Atlanta. After working in a local dental office for several years and through the mentorship of Dr. Portia Grayson, DDS, she decided to become a dentist. In her time at ASDOH, Dr. Canada has been a very active participant in community service projects, served on various committees and held several leadership positions in various organizations. One of her greatest accomplishments at ASDOH was in her role as the 2013-2014 President of the American Association of Public Health Dentistry. Through this position, Dr. Canada has increased student body awareness to relevant dental public health issues, public health career paths, and has fostered interdisciplinary collaborations with other ATSU programs. After receiving her MPH and DMD from ATSU, Dr. Canada plans to work in dental public health at the state and local level and later transition into working in a federal government position.

2014 Scholar - Lauren Moss Hunt (3)

Lauren Moss Hunt – Lauren is currently a first year Physician Assistant student at ATSU. She received her bachelors of science in Kinesiology at Arizona State University. Lauren was also a member of Barrett, the Honors College and completed her thesis on exercise interventions with the Down syndrome population. During her undergraduate studies, she worked in several academic and community based positions on campus, and was a scribe at a local hospital just before starting the PA program.  Lauren is involved in the ATSU community by tutoring fellow students in Anatomy & Physiology, and is the treasurer and secretary of the PA program’s Kettel Society. Upon graduation, she looks forward to working in an underserved community, providing quality care in a family practice or women’s health clinic.

♦ School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona ~ SOMA

Cassandra Beard (2)

Casandra “Cassie” Beard – Cassie Beard is a member of the class of 2017 at SOMA, and will begin the Masters of Public Health program in the fall of 2014. Originally from Jefferson City, Mo., Cassie received her B.S. in biology from Truman State University. Cassie enjoys volunteering with children in her hometown, serving as a tutor in English and math for grade-school children. She currently serves as vice president of the Student Government Association- Arizona Campus, and the Arizona representative to the University Student Association.  Cassie is an avid sports fan and loves to spend her free time watching the St. Louis Cardinals.
